In general, all licensed plumbers are covered by insurance in carrying out plumbing works that requires a compliance certificate such as backflow certifications. Other work that requires a compliance certificate that is covered with insurance are the following:

  • Plumbing work that has a total value of $750 or more which includes materials, labour, appliances and fixtures purchased by the plumber, plumbing company or the homeowner
  • Plumbing works carried out below the ground or in sanitary drains
  • All plumbing work that involve the installation, modification or relocation of consumer gas piping
  • Plumbing work involving installation, relocation, replacement and conversion of any gas-powered appliance
  • Plumbing work that involved the construction, installation, relocation, alteration and replacement of cooling towers.

Coverage insurance for this plumbing works will include the following:

  • Rectification of defective plumbing work that are not within plumbing standards
  • Trade practice liability concerns
  • Non-completion and consequential loss due to late completion or death of the licensed plumber. This also covers work conducted by licensed plumbers that are incomplete due to suspension of license, or forced end contract of work due to plumber’s discretion to refuse completing the work
  • Public liability wherein the plumbing work results in damage to property or personal injury

Period Coverage and Limitations of Plumbing Insurance

Coverage insurance period for rectification of defective work, consequential loss and non-completion of work is within six years from the date that the plumbing work was completed or from the date the licensed plumber released the customer with a compliance certificate for the completion of the work. The plumbing insurance will also continue for a six-year period even if the licensed plumber ceases to be licensed or fails to renew their policy during the 6-year period.

Public liability insurance also covers up to six years, starting from the completion date of the work or from the date that the licensed plumber releases the customer with a compliance certificate for the completion of the work.

Limitations are also required for plumbing insurance coverage. There is a limit on the amount of the claim under the insurance for specific claims.

In most cases, the public liability insurance limit is $5,000,000 for any one claim. Domestic plumbing works are limited to $50,000 while non-domestic plumbing work is limited to $100,000 for any one claim or series of claims.

Concerns in plumbing work are lodged as a complaint via the building authority governing plumbing works in the state. This body has the power and jurisdiction to compel plumbing practitioners to fix any defective or non-compliant plumbing work. The NSW Fair Trading is the governing body that mandates plumbing work related issues in Sydney.
